Peter Trell of King Sports Picks Discusses NFL Wild Card Weekend
This week brings a big opportunity for sports bettors, from NFL Wild Card weekend to the College Football National Championship. Oakland Raiders at (-3.5, 35.5) Houston Texans, Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET
“Let’s face it, the Raiders are not the same team without Derek Carr under center. Connor Cook had a decent outing, unexpectedly, but can we rely on him to go into Houston and cover the +3.5 point spread?
Houston’s defense has allowed on average just above 16 PPG at home this season. On the other side of the field, Brock Osweiler leads the Houston offense. I can’t say with certainty that his play favors the Texans. I personally feel he is a liability throwing the ball and has thrown too many unnecessary interceptions this season. This game is all about the defense and how Connor Cook handles the pressure.”
Detroit Lions at (-8, 43) Seattle Seahawks, Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET
“Five of the Lions’ seven losses this season were decided by seven points or less. The Lions are a team that really has nothing to lose and went into Seattle last season and lost by 3 points in defensive battle. The Lion’s may be (9–7) but they could easily have double digit wins this season after losing some close games. Seattle should win this game but covering this large spread could prove difficult considering their defense is not the defense of a recent years. The Lions have lost three straight, all to playoff teams, to close out the season. The biggest question remains is whether they have ran out of gas or if the playoffs will bring new energy?”
Miami Dolphins at (-10, 46) Pittsburgh Steelers, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET
“This is a tall task for a Miami team that will most likely be without QB Ryan Tannehill and center Mike Pouncy on Sunday. Yes, the Dolphins has success running the ball vs the Steelers in October but that was with Pouncy at center. Let us not also forget the Dolphins defensive struggles defending the run this season. Only the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers allowed more rushing yards in the regular season than the Dolphins. We know the limited success both of these teams had in 2016. This is a tall order for the Dolphins”.
New York Giants at (-4.5, 44.5) Green Bay Packers, Sunday, 4:40 p.m. ET
“This is the marquee matchup in Wild Card weekend. The Packers are the hottest team in the NFL and the Giants have emerged with one of the top defenses in the league. It will be 11 degrees at Lambeau Field. Manning has only played in two career games when it was below 20 and he has a touchdown and three picks in those games. Rodgers is used to this weather by now playing in Green Bay and Minnesota all of these years. Tell me cold weather doesn’t affect these players and I tell you’re delusional. The Giants offense could give the Packers depleted secondary some problems but the Giants may have to rely more on the run. Giants are 4–2 ATS last 6 games while the Packers are 5–1 ATS. Packers are 6–2 ATS at home this season while the Giants are 4–4 ATS on the road. “
