Two up and coming teams will square off Wednesday night on the left coast as the Philadelphia 76ers take on the Los Angeles Lakers in the Staples Center. Vegas has listed the Sixers as road favorites (-3) and the O/U is currently 218.5.
“Trust the Process” has been the motto of this young Philadelphia basketball team. Four years of “tanking” appears to finally be paying off as they have two young stars of the game in Joel Embid and Ben Simmons. Embid is truly one of the best centers in the game and a game changer on the offensive and defensive side of the court. Embid leads the team with 20.9 PPG and 10.8 RPG. Ben Simmons is the early favorite for Rookie of the Year. Simmons is a 6–10 point guard that is a matchup nightmare and is 2nd on the team averaging 17 PPG, 7.5 APG and 9 RPG. Simmons is a triple-double waiting to happen each time he steps on the court.
The Sixers, as a team, are 10th in the league in scoring offense with 107.9 points per game. Philadelphia is 3rd in rebounding with 47.6 boards a night and 2ndwith 26.3 assists per contest. The Sixers do need to tighten up their defense as they are currently allowing 109 PPG. The Philadelphia 76ers have won five of their last seven road games.
The Los Angeles Lakers look for a statement victory her after splitting their last eight games. The Lakers are another young team with some talented players, including the #2 overall draft pick, Lonzo Ball. Ball has had his share of ups and downs so far in his rookie year. Ball does have a triple-double on his resume but his shooting has really affected his game.
The Lakers leading scorer is G Jordan Clarkson (15.5 PPG) and Brooke Lopez (15.3 PPG). Brandon Ingram (13.9 PPG) and Kyle Kuzma (14.9 PPG) round out this team’s leading scorers. The Lakers are 21st in the league in scoring offense as they put up 103.3 points per game. The Lakers stand 17th in the league in scoring defense as they allow 105.9 points per night.
I am laying off the spread in this matchup. The Sixers are the better team but they are on the back end of a long road trip and the Lakers play better at home. I am focused on the Total which is currently set at 218.5. Under is 4–0 in the Lakers last 4 games, 6–1 the last 7 vs the Eastern Conference, the Under is 9–3 in Lakers last 12 games following a straight-up win and 7–3 their last 10 home games. The Under is 6–2–1 in 76ers last 9 vs. a team with a losing straight up record and the Under is 6–2–1 the last 9 meetings between these two teams. This Sixers team is very young and they may be a little sluggish after a long road trip. I lean towards the Under 218.5 in Wednesday night’s matchup.
