San Francisco 49ers (14–6) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (14–5)

Super Bowl LVIII is set to kick off on Sunday and the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers get set to battle the AFC Champion and defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. Only eight teams in NFL history have won back-to-back Super Bowls and the Chiefs are aiming to be the first team to accomplish this feat in 19 years. This is a rematch of Super Bowl LIV four years ago when the Chiefs bested the 49ers, 31–20 as -1.5 point favorites. Oddsmakers in Vegas have pegged the 49ers as -2.5 point favorites with a current O/U of 47.5.

49ers Betting Preview

The 49ers come into the Super Bowl primed to get that elusive title that has alluded the franchise since 1995. They have a second crack at the Chiefs in four years with some key different players from the last Super Bowl. San Francisco has stars on both sides of the ball including TE George Kittle, WR Deebo Samuel, and RB Christian McCaffrey to name a few. The offense is led by QB Brock Purdy who may not have the flash of Patrick Mahomes but he has done nothing but win since taking over under center. Purdy went 7–3 against playoff teams this season and led the team to an average of 29 points per game in the playoffs. Defensively, the Niners' defense comes in with one of the best front fours in football. Overall this season, the Niners’ defense has allowed just 19.8 points per game to teams that made the playoffs. They have struggled a bit in the playoffs, allowing nearly 28 points per game. However, the Niners’ defensive group has tightened up in the second half by allowing a total of 22 points in the second half of their two games. They will face a tough task on Sunday with attempting to contain the best quarterback in the game.

Chiefs Betting Preview

The Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of history as they head into Super Bowl LVIII with a chance to become the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots turned the feat in 2004–2005. Patrick Mahomes, 14–3 in 17 career playoff games, is the youngest quarterback to start four Super Bowls in league history at age 28. He will go down as one of the best to ever play the position but he has been helped by one of the best tight ends in the game, Travis Kelce, and a Chiefs ground game is averaging 127.3 yards per contest, and Isiah Pacheco leads the way with 254 yards and 3 touchdowns in the playoffs. The Chiefs' defensive unit this season has been arguably their best in this recent run of success. They allowed just over 18 points per game to playoff teams this season including just 12.6 points per game in their three playoff games.

The San Francisco 49ers are probably the better, more balanced team and should be favored in Sunday’s matchup. However, the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes and he continues to prove why he is the best in the game, perhaps ever. Both teams have stout defenses and while the 49ers have better skill position players, the Chiefs always find a way to win. Mahomes as an underdog also has terrific value when you consider he’s 10–1–1 ATS as an underdog throughout his career, and 9 of those 10 covers were outright victories. The 49ers are winning too, but they’ve failed to cover each of their last 3 games and 5 of their last 7 games overall. This will be a tightly contested football game that will come down to whichever team executes late in the 4th quarter. I’ll gladly put my money on Mahomes and this Chiefs team to cover the +2.5 point spread and you may even consider a ML bet as well.
