Southern Miss Golden Eagles vs. Tulane Green Wave Free Armed Forces Bowl Pick, 1–4–2020
Southern Miss Golden Eagles (7–5) vs. Tulane Green Wave (6–6)
Time: Saturday, January 4, 11:30 AM EST
Current Odds: Tulane -7, O/U 57
The American Athletic Conference meets Conference U.S.A in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl with the Tulane Green Wave battling it out with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Southern Miss backed into bowl season, losing their final two games of the regular season to Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic. The Golden Eagles are 7–5 on the season, 6–6 ATS and 8–4 with the under. Tulane had a second half of the 2019 season to forget. The Green Wave were 1–5 over their last six games, including a three-game losing streak to end the year. Tulane is now 6–6 overall, 8–4 ATS and 6–6 with the over/under total.
Southern Miss relied heavily on the pass in 2019 ranking among the top 25 nationally and leading the Conference USA in passing offense (288.6 YPG). The Golden Eagles are pretty steady on both sides of the ball. They are giving up just 25.9 points and 350.3 yards per game on defense. Offensively, Southern Miss is averaging 27.8 points and 411.3 yards per game.
The Green Wave is a strong offensive team, averaging 33.3 points and 456.8 yards per contest. Defensively, Tulane is allowing 27.4 points and 378.9 yards per contest. The Tulane defense has struggled down the stretch this tar as they allowed 35.7 PPG over their last six games, compared to giving up just 19.2 in their first six games of the year.
Both Southern Miss and Tulane have plenty of weapons to choose from offensively, but both are also susceptible to big plays defensively. These teams have had close to five weeks to prepare for this game, so I think we will see some new wrinkles from both offenses as the coordinators pull out all of the play book in bowl games. Look for the offenses to take control of this game with the the final score surpassing the total of 57.
