The Rangers had no issue with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, walking away 11–4 winners. Martin Perez had a decent outing, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing 3 ER on 9 hits. Carlos Gomez homered twice and drove in five runs to lift the Rangers to their second win in their last three games and sixth win over their last 10 games.
Pitching for the Rangers in the opening game of this three-game set is Yu Darvish (6–5, 3.35 ERA). The right-hander has struggled lately, going 1–3 with a 4.45 ERA over his past five starts. Darvish is 3–1 with a 2.01 ERA in five career starts against the Yankees, but all three of his victories have come in Arlington. Darvish is 0–1 with a 4.66 ERA in two starts at Yankee Stadium.
The Rangers have struggled on the road this year where they have gone just (14–19) and they have allowed 4.82 RPG. Texas’ offense seems to be clicking, however, after averaging 5.70 RPG in their last 10 games. Carlos Gomez has provided a nice boost for this Rangers offense, going 9–23 with 5 home runs and 14 RBI’s the last 6 games. Gomez is 3–5 with an RBI in his career vs the Yankees starter, Masahiro Tanaka.

New York suffered another defeat on Thursday, losing 10–5 to the Angels. The Bronx Bombers have now lost 8 of their last 10 games which included a 7 game losing streak prior to Wednesday night’s win.
Despite the recent turbulence for the Yankees, New York is still 23–10 at home and tied with Boston for 1st place in the AL East.
Masahiro Tanaka will toe the rubber for the Yankees in game one and he has gone (5–7) with a 6.34 ERA in 14 starts on the year, including 0–2 with a 6.32 ERA in his last three starts. Tanaka looked out of sorts in his last start at Oakland, allowing five runs, including three homers on Saturday.
It’s been a rough season so far for Tanaka and it won’t get easier facing the hot Rangers offense.
Luckily for Tanaka he has one of the top offenses in the baseball. The Yankees have been a strong offensive team as they enter this game ranked 1st in the league in scoring, 5.71 RPG, while also ranking 4th in hitting at .273 and 3rd in homers with 114.

Despite the Rangers current record and the Yankees current losing streak, this is an intriguing matchup of two possible AL Playoff teams. This will be the first time that fellow countrymen Yu Darvish and Masahiro Tanaka have faced off vs each other. Unfortunately for Darvish and Tanaka they are not pitching their best. Both starters have encountered trouble this season which should be a great opportunity for these offenses to tee off.
