Toronto Blue Jays (18–24) vs Baltimore Orioles (23–16)
Starting Pitchers: A Sanchez (0–1) (2.95) vs. C Tillman (1–0) (2.89))
The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays will begin a three-game set when they square off at Oriole Park at Camden Yards tonight. The Blue Jays didn’t start the season the way they intended but they were hit with the injury bug early, losing Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson. Tulo may be activated during this series but Donaldson isn’t scheduled to come back until the end of the month. However, the Blue Jays have managed to win 8 of their last 12 games a fight back close to the .500 mark. Baltimore has remained at the top part of the AL East since the start of the season but they have been slumping recently losing 6 of their last 7 games and two straight.
Toronto rattled off five straight wins until losing 3 of 4 to the Atlanta Braves. The Blue Jays pitchers had some control issues in the Atlanta series, hitting seven Atlanta batters in the first three games of that series while allowing 27 runs. One positive to take from the Atlanta series is that Jose Bautista is swinging a hot bat. Bautista went 3-for-4 with a homer on Wednesday and is hitting .355 with four homers in his past nine games.
Right-hander Aaron Sanchez is getting the start for Toronto on Friday. Sanchez is 0–1 this season but boasts a 2.95 ERA through four starts.
Blue Jays are 1–4 in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning record
Just as Jose Bautista is starting to heat up at the plate, so is Chris Davis. Davis has homered four times in the last four games and has seven RBIs and eight runs scored during a six-game hitting streak. The offense really needs to help out their struggling pitching. The Orioles have allowed 11 runs in their last two games and four or more runs in eight of their last nine games.
Chris Tillman will oppose Sanchez on Friday. The right-hander is 1–0 with a 2.89 ERA through just two starts so far this season. Tillman blanked the White Sox over five innings on May 7, when Baltimore coasted to a 4–0 victory.
Baltimore is 20–8 in Tillman’s last 28 home starts
Baltimore has spent the past 7 games on the road and must be eager to return home where they are (13–3). Tillman has pitched well since his return and while he’s pitched just 9 innings, he has an ERA under three in his last three years combined at home and pitched five scoreless innings in his only home start this season. I like the Orioles to get a much-needed win tonight at home where they have lost just three games.
