Tulsa Golden Hurricanes vs Oklahoma State Cowboys
Line: Oklahoma State -18, 71
Game Time: Thursday August 31, 7:30 pm
Two teams that finished the 2016 season with a (10–3) record will kick off their season on Thursday. The Tulsa Golden Hurricanes travel to take on inner state foe, Oklahoma State.
It almost feels like the Tulsa program isn’t getting enough attention. Philip Montgomery has taken the Golden Hurricane to a bowl game in each of his first two seasons and his team won 10 games last season for the first time since 2012. The Golden Hurricanes are 16–10 ATS under head coach Phillip Montgomery.
Tulsa is in the midst of a starting QB controversy and leading into this game, Phillip Montgomery hasn’t named a starter. They will have big shoes to fill with the production Dane Evans threw up last season. Fortunately, the Golden Hurricane offense can run through D’Angelo Brewer, who rushed for 1,435 yards and seven touchdowns last season.
Tulsa hopes to improve upon their defense from 2016 as they return Craig Suits who had 79 tackles last season, Petera Wilson Jr. had 6.5 sacks and Jesse Brubaker had two interceptions. Defensively, Tulsa was 76th in the country last year, allowing 29.8 points per game.
Oklahoma State comes in ranked 11th in the country and they are a growing favorite in the marketplace. Much of this has to do with one of the top quarterback/wide receiver combinations in the country. QB Mason Rudolph had a breakout season in 2016, throwing for 28 touchdowns to 4 interceptions with over 4,000 yards passing. His favorite target is WR James Washington who racked up 1380 receiving yards along with ten touchdowns last season. Did we mention they also have a running back in Justice Hill, who topped 1,100 yards and six touchdowns as a freshman.? Oklahoma State averaged 38.6 points per game and can duplicate those numbers with their returning talent.
The Cowboys have a legit shot at winning the Big 12 and are a darkhorse contender for the college football playoff. They will need to improve upon their defense which was steady last season. Oklahoma State was third in the Big 12 last season, allowing 26.5 points per game.It may be tempting to take Tulsa and the +18 points in this matchup based on their past success. However, the fact that they haven’t named a starting QB is a cause for concern for this offense. I feel it will take a couple of weeks to get up to speed and it will be tough to keep up with this Oklahoma State offense. I expect the Cowboys to put on a show in their home opener and cover the spread in this matchup.
