The rivalry between №11 USC and №13 Notre Dame stands as one of the most hallowed in college football, with a lineage that transcends individual season records. Both teams enter this matchup (6–1) and have high hopes of reaching the college football playoff and both teams are ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since 2009.
The Fighting Irish suffered through a four-win season in 2016 which included a 45–27 loss to USC to end the season. Notre Dame was a wounded team entering last season’s matchup vs USC but this season head coach Brian Kelly has a relatively injury free team. The Fighting Irish have relied on a multifaceted run game, paced by running back Josh Adams’ 129.3 rushing yards per game — seventh in the country — and supplemented by the dual-threat playmaker Wimbush at 80.4 yards per game.
USC started out the season winning their first four games before falling at Washington State by three points on September 29. They rebounded to win their last two, including a one-point victory over Utah last weekend. The Trojans have had three games decided by three points or less this season. The quarterback for USC is Sam Darnold, who has thrown for 2063 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Both teams have reliable defenses with USC allowing 23.7 PPG while Notre Dame’s defense is allowing 16.8 PPG. The difference maker in this ball game is the clock control with Notre Dame’s rushing attack which averages 308 YPG on the ground, ranking them 5th in the country. Notre Dame has been very effective rushing the football behind their mammoth offensive line. The Irish are 4–0 both SU and ATS since their one-point loss to Georgia. The Trojans are 0–5 ATS their last 5 games overall.
I really like Notre Dame in this matchup vs USC. The Irish are coming off a BYE and USC is really banged up. Everything lines up well for an Irish win at home. The home team is 4–0 ATS the last 4 meetings and the favorite is 5–0 ATS the last 5 meetings. Take Notre Dame -3.5 in Saturday’s featured matchup.
