NBA Betting Prediction by Arnold Jones
San Antonio Spurs (69–26) vs Golden State Warriors (76–15)
Game 1 is in the books and the Warriors managed to 113–111 narrow escape of the San Antonio Spurs. Tonight, we have a Game 2 matchup that oddsmakers have the Warriors listed as -14 point favorites due to Spurs F Kawhi Leonard’s sprained ankle. The Spurs have ruled Leonard out for Game 2 in Golden State and the books have adjusted the line accordingly.
San Antonio will need to figure out a way to compensate for Leonard’s 25.5 PPG, which leads the team. The Spurs led by as much as 25 points and were up 23 when Leonard landed on Golden State center Zaza Pachulia’s foot after attempting a jump shot with 7:53 left in the third quarter, forcing him out of the game for good. The Warriors immediately went on an 18–0 run and outscored San Antonio 58–33 after Leonard’s exit en route to an 113–111 victory.
This obviously is a huge blow for the Spurs, who were already without PG Tony Parker. In order to beat a team like the Warriors, you need all key pieces to be at their best and this is clearly not the case for San Antonio. To go down 0–2 in this series would be a devastating blow to the Spurs.
Golden State leads all playoff teams scoring on average 115 PPG and allowing 100 PPG. They are also 2nd in rebounding with 46 per contest and 2nd in assists with 26.8 dimes per game. They have a roster full of superstars where not one player is bigger than the team. They enjoy passing as much as they enjoy scoring.
I personally don’t like laying this many points (-14) in any NBA contest. However, bettors should not overlook that the Warriors came into Game 1 of this series off of 6 days rest after sweeping the Jazz. It’s always tough to come back with high intensity after such a long layoff. Good teams find a way to win and they did just that in Game 1. The Spurs lose their top scorer and it will be very tough for this team to replace Leonard’s presence. However, I feel the Spurs have enough pieces to cover this large spread.
