6 Things to do During the Easter Weekend
With a long holiday to look forward to, here are some classes to try out over the Good Friday weekend on 30 March — 1 April! Whether you’re single or you have little ones, there’s something out there to satisfy your curiosities.
Capelli Hair Crown & Hair Pins
Are you looking for something floral to fit your spring outfit? Sarah from Poppy Flora & Nature Studio holds one-off classes where you learn and take home a flower garland with you!
In Ancient Rome, flower crowns were a significant symbol of victory and authority as the corolla. Its misuse such as placing them on a statue’s head could lead to exile or imprisonment. But there’s no need to worry about that nowadays, as they act as a decorative piece for any flower enthusiast or brides-to-be.
Although flower garlands evoke the image of the daisy chain, Sarah can work with a huge variety of flowers that would suit everyone’s tastes!
Paper Quilling for Kids
Ever wondered how paper filigrees are coiled into beautiful, compact shapes? Now your kids can learn how to create colourful patterned designs!
Based on Renaissance-era ironworks, paper quilling developed into the artform today thanks to the French and Italian nuns and monks. This craft was then passed down to Victorian-era gentle ladies, brought over into America, and eventually commercialised into it’s current form today.
Adults wouldn’t have to miss out either — Artiza Studios holds classes for the young at hearts too.
Singing Bowl Meditation
If you’re looking for a workshop that calms your senses before the eventual work rush on Monday, have a go on the Singing Bowl Meditation workshop by The Singing Bowl Studio!
Originally known as standing bells, these metallic instruments date back to the Shang Dynasty (circa 1600–1046 BCE) in China where they were known as nao. The bells distributed and used by The Singing Bowl Studio are hand-made by Nepali artisans. If you were to buy one of these bowls for yourself, Christina, the owner of The Singing Bowl Studio, would be able to guide you to purchasing a bowl that resonates with you.
Baking High Hydration Bread
Did you know that different hydration ratios in bread starters would give you different textures in your resulting bread? Bakerz@Work Academy’s Chef, William Woo, could show you various techniques in handling your hydrated dough to make sure that your resulting bread is “holey moley”!
High hydration starters tends to be sticky to the touch and require a different method in handling, such as stretch and fold, rather than kneading. In addition, this class is also SkillsFuture accredited — do contact Bakerz@Work for more info on how to claim SFC.
If you’re free a little earlier on March 24–25, there is a 2 day Easter-themed baking programme.
L.A. Style Salsa Dance
Why not pick up a new dance form to add to your workout routine? Learn some L.A. style salsa and show off your moves to your dance partner in the next social event!
With origins from Cuban dances and Puerto Rican bomba and plena, salsa’s popularity flared up when Latino communities brought their dances to places like New York and Los Angeles in the 1940’s. As implied by its name, salsa has variations in its dance form, with the Los Angeles style (also known as On1, for stepping and emphasising on count 1) being one of the more common forms in Singapore besides New York (On2) and Cuban (Casino Rueda) styles.
Duende offers trial classes for their ongoing dance programs so you can get a taster of the dance style. They also teach Spanish dances and Jazz variations.
Marbled Cardholders
Why let form follow function when it comes to doing business? These eye-catching marbled cardholders would surely be a hit at the next networking event, and you can learn to make them yourself too!
In this workshop, Adlina would cover leather crafting basics like cutting, sewing, and marbling with 10 different colours! You also get to de-boss your initials or your name on the cardholder so that it is unique to you.
If these workshops have intrigued you, why not spend your long weekeend in learning something new?
