Verlocal Diaries: Joe’s Fitness
Each week, “Verlocal Diaries” records the Verlocal team’s adventures to various classes conducted by our hosts. From the narration of our hosts’ stories to the thoughts of our fellow participants, we piece together everything we have experienced to create a long lasting memory in the form of a diary entry — that is both personal and shareable.
Dear Diary,
Fitness Boot Camp. The sound of it was daunting to me, especially since I was never someone athletic. As we made our way there, my mind roamed wildly as I imagined people getting tekan by the coach.
In reality, the boot camp is just a friendly neighbourhood gathering organised by Joe. Joe hopes that his students can achieve health and wellness using a holistic approach through these bootcamps.
“They have to understand that deep down inside, it’s not about the body or the meals they consumed. It’s about how they lead a lifestyle for themselves. Lifestyle, there is the good and there is the bad. It’s completely up to you to choose for yourself. I’m here to deliver the good one to you.” — Joe
Meet Elizabeth, who wishes to make exercises fun instead of a chore.
When Elizabeth and her boyfriend ran around the neighbourhood, they met Joe and decided to go for a trial session. That was when she became hooked to the boot camp sessions. Elizabeth mentioned that she was working out on her own prior to her participation in the boot camp and we asked her what is the difference between the two.
“The sessions are fun and fast and I enjoy them better than my own fitness regimes since they are more fun and dynamic.” — Elizabeth
Elizabeth also shared that she loves the supportive environment and the exercises that are never boring. She also like how she made friends through her time bonding with the rest of the participants. Huda is one of the friends Elizabeth has made through the boot camp.
Meet Huda, who uses the workout sessions to unwind herself.
The day we went down happens to be the day after the Hari Raya celebration and we were surprised to see Huda there amidst her busy Hari Raya house visiting schedule.
Huda works with kids for long hours and she sees the boot camp sessions as a fun wind-down session for herself. She joins Joe twice a week consistently and notices the changes in her fitness.
“The workout is overwhelming yet progressive and I feel like I am getting stronger with each session.” — Huda
To Huda, the guidance Joe provided in the sessions pushed her fitness limits and improved her physical wellness.
“You can eat whatever you want but always in moderation. There’s no point if you can’t enjoy yourself. So once in a while, go have your nasi lemak and durian!” — Joe
Despite how daunting the boot camp sounded to me initially, the way Joe incorporates the different fitness routines makes the sessions look fun and engaging for the participants. It reminds me of how fun the weekly physical education lessons were and it’s great to be able to have that again after graduation.
For those of you who are keen in incorporating more fun fitness sessions into your schedule, you can definitely check out Joe’s boot camp and personal training sessions!
