Are you reconsidering your career? Are you going to be part of the Post Covid Great Resignation prediction?

Covid has indeed made us consider what we can do differently in our lives and in our work. It has made us consider what we like and what we do not like. The big question this presents us with is — what am I going to do with this new awareness?

Awareness is one thing, but Action is another.

In this blog, I attempt to position some ideas for you to assess and reflect on before taking any jumps. The grass is not always greener and you could find you actually have what you want already or that your current organisation can meet with you in the middle somewhere.

Consider the old-fashioned approach of one side of the paper being all the good things about the current position and on the other side all the reasons you would want to change it. Start at a pace with whatever comes to your mind and then you will notice that it will slow down until you have it all on paper. If you prefer brainstorms to lists then this is a good starting point too!

Some of the questions you can pose while you are working on this could be:-

> What do you want MORE of in your career and in fact in your life?

> What do you want LESS of in your career and in your life?

>What are the top three most important things in your career?

> What are the top three most important things in your life?

> Where are you being challenged in your current position and where would you like to be challenged?

> Do you need more or less responsibility?

> Are you fulfilling your ambition?

Hot topic areas such as Working from home, hybrid working, commuting sharing offices, human contact and interaction, more time at home, work-life balance, and finances can all be addressed in the questions above so that you get a clear picture of what you want and what you don’t want.

Once you have thought through what it is you really want what I feel helps is to take some time out and visualise yourself in the future. In this visualisation consider the following:

  • What does this look like for you?
  • Where are you at this time?
  • How are you feeling?
  • What are you doing?
  • What are you saying about your career and its direction?
  • What are others noticing?

Get a real sense of what your future could be. Then ask yourself:

  • Do I like what I see?
  • Is it better than what I have currently?
  • Would I have achieved my initial reason for the change?
  • Will I be happier and healthier?

Are there any messages that I can take away from the visualisation exercise to enhance my current role and perhaps shape it?

I often find when making decisions like this to consider the question: what will I feel like if I don’t take action on this new awareness?

The action you take doesn’t have to fall in line with the prediction of the experts, it could be that with some negotiation and conversations that you can have exactly what you want/need.
