Welcome to the June 2024 instalment of the Microsoft Product Terms Update from the Version 1 Microsoft License Consulting Team. Each month, Microsoft releases license changes on their product terms — this month sees a variety of updates to both product terms and supporting license briefs. Learn more about these changes in this blog or by watching this short YouTube video below.

Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 — Microsoft has updated the Prerequisite License(s) for Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 in the License Prerequisites table, that now also include:

· Microsoft 365 Apps for Business

· Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise

· Exchange Online

· SharePoint Online

· OneDrive for Business

· Microsoft Clipchamp

· Microsoft Teams EEA/Enterprise/Essentials

· Planner Plan 1

· Project Online

· Visio Online

Universal License Terms for Online Services — Microsoft has updated Azure Generative AI services terms for clarity on Training content limitations. Microsoft Generative AI Services do not use customer content to train or improve their AI models. Customers are also prohibited from using these services to generate data for training AI models that replicate Microsoft AI functionality, unless explicitly allowed. However, using the service to create content for dynamic AI models is permitted.

Privacy & Security Terms

Microsoft has added Microsoft Sentinel to the Core Online Services table, Security Practices and Policies Table and added new clauses on data residency. They have also added Azure DDOS and Bastion to the Azure Core Online Services table.

The interesting part of the notice above pertains to the ‘new clause on data residency’ which must be related to the “If Customer purchases an Advanced Data Residency subscription, then Microsoft will store certain Customer Data at rest in the applicable Geo”. In accordance with this section and the ‘Advanced Data Residency Commitments’ section of the product documentation (https://aka.ms/adroverview ) Microsoft ADR, as it’s abbreviated, appears to be a subscription similar to Multi-Geo subscriptions, but it’s not in the Product Terms general availability tables as it is only available to customers that meet the eligibility prerequisites of having a default tenancy in certain regions and 365 online services.

Microsoft Azure

Microsoft have added a clause on automatic updates for Microsoft Defender for Identity and updated Azure Maps terms to align with merger of Bing Maps functionality. Licensed customers take note that they must agree to automatic updates being installed by Microsoft Defender for Identity without any additional notice.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint — This month includes two changes to Microsoft product terms including:

  • Student Use Benefits and Academic Programs — Removed Microsoft Defender for Endpoint P2 for Student from Student Use Benefit Entitlements by Qualifying Program · table. There’s no further information as to why, but the impact is that Students no longer receive the entitlement to use the product as part of the Student Use Benefit program.
  • Availability Table — However, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint has been added to the Availability table, the Prerequisite Table, and the Student Use Benefit Entitlements by Qualifying Program.

As Microsoft license experts, we can help you demystify these and any other product changes and clarify what this could mean for your license position. If you have any questions relating to this or any other Microsoft licensing matter, please go to our website or contact us.
