What is ‘Ecoacoustics’ and how will it’s new journal help develop the field?

Ecoacoustics is an emerging discipline in ecology that investigates the role of sound in ecological processes. It examines ecology on a wide array of scales, from looking at individual species, to ecological communities and even entire landscapes. Investigating soundscapes on land, sea and air, ecoacoustics provides a unique way to study ecology.

This discipline has recently developed advanced methods of data collection in hostile and remote areas, ranging from tropical cloud forests to deserts, from deep oceans to arctic regions, and has used these to establish and test new and important theories. Researchers in ecoacoustics are testing powerful metrics of sound analysis with rigorous statistical approaches and are experimenting with new recording devices and designing networks of automated sensors.

Journal of Ecoacoustics has now been launched to help build and develop the discipline. The journal has been started by the International Institute of Ecoacoustics with Editor in Chief Prof. Almo Farina who has been working to develop the field for many years. The journal has just published its first few papers, thanks to the sponsorship of Lunilettronik. The journal will publish a range of articles and perspectives on everything related to Ecoacoustics — including, but not limited to:

  • Ecoacoustics of species, population and communities
  • Soundscape analysis and signatures
  • Development of acoustic monitoring schemes
  • Ecoacoustic methodologies for biodiversity assessment and species preservation
  • Acoustic rehabilitation of habitats and landscapes
  • Management practices based on the acoustic habitats conservation
  • Effects of human acoustic intrusion in urban, rural, and natural landscapes
  • Role of sounds in cultural heritage and art
  • Ecoacoustic conservation and management of protected areas
  • Effects of global change in acoustic habits of species, communities and landscapes
  • Ecoacoustic metrics and development of dedicated software

We look forward to reading your contributions that will help build and develop the discipline of ecoacoustics. You can read the first articles and submit your own research from the journal homepage.

This journal has been made possible by Veruscript Publishing Services, which helps societies, institutions and academics launch and run their own open access journals.
