Recalls

Vitakraft Sun Seed is voluntarily recalling certain rabbit and macaw diets due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacteria can cause illness in humans, especially the elderly or very young, and can be very dangerous to pregnant women, but no illnesses have been reported thus far. The recall includes Sunseed Parrot Fruit & Vegetable diet and Sunseed SunSations Rabbit Food. Find the full list of products here.

Hospira is voluntarily recalling certain lots of their 8.4% Sodium Bicarbonate Injection, 4% Sodium Bicarbonate Additive Solution (NeutTM), Succinylcholine Chloride Injection (Quelicin TM), and Potassium Phosphates Injection, due to lack of sterility assurance. Full list of lot number of products included in the recall can be found here.

Alvogen is voluntarily recalling injectable Clindamycin due to potential contamination and lack of known sterility. An Urgent Drug Recall Notice has been issued, and affected lot numbers can be found here.

Phillips Company is voluntarily recalling of certain topical antibiotic products in 5mL dropper bottles due to FDA inspection revealing questionable manufacturing practices. Find the list of products here.

Update: United Pet Group expands recall of rawhide chew products to several more brands including private label brands due to possible chemical contamination. Private label brands include Dentley’s, Petco, Hill Country Fare, Enzadent, Dentahex, and more. Check out the full list here.

Industry News

The National Association of Veterinary Technicians of America (NAVTA) is pushing for a nation-wide adoption of the title “Registered Veterinary Nurse” (RVN) in lieu of the LVT, LVMT, RVT, and CVT titles, and standardization of education and credentialing of the position. The NAVTA proposes that the move will help clear ambiguity surrounding the qualifications of the job, and will help reduce job dissatisfaction and increase patient safety. The effort will likely take several years to be implemented if it is successfully legislated, but could result in elevation of the prestige of the profession. Read more here.

The AVMA Council on Education (COE)is pushing accredited veterinary schools to include more debt counseling in their curriculum as well as more information on business and financial management. High debt loads faced by new graduates is a growing concern of many in the profession, and the COE wants veterinary education to better prepare students for the realities of financial management after graduation.
