The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) adopted a global animal welfare strategy at the 85th General Session meeting. Increased guidance on animal diseases and maintenance of veterinary service evaluation rank highly on the agenda. The Performance of Veterinary Services Pathway will continue to provide increased service capacity while international standards for welfare are established based on ethics, practice, and research. The OIE will encourage these standards to be adopted into laws and regulations regarding animal care and use worldwide.

The AVMA has named a new class of Congressional Fellows for the 2017–2018 legislative session. Drs. Radhika Gharpure, Matt Holland, and Mark Logan will serve in Washington, DC for one year, advising policymakers on veterinary, health, and small business issues.

SwineTech, a veterinary start-up out of Iowa, has developed a product that attempts to save piglets from being crushed by sows. The device vibrates and shocks sows when the piglets squeal, forcing the sow to move if she is lying on any of her litter. It also monitors temperature to control heat lamps, enabling piglets to stay warm away from the sow. The product is currently in testing on around 300 farms for data collection.
