Industry News

• At the upcoming AVMA Convention, House of Delegates members will be discussing telemedicine and the VCPR at length. According to policymakers, telemedicine along with emergency response, food safety, hospice care, and regenerative medicine will take the stage in the discussions and forums at the meetings. The annual convention will be held July 21–26 in Indianapolis. Read more here.
• Horses will now be considered livestock in Kentucky. The reclassification from domestic companion animal to livestock could have significant welfare implications for equids in that state. Supporters of the statute amendment, which passed unanimously in the Kentucky State Senate, say that the new category will enable horse owners to receive tax breaks which can lessen the burden of expensive horse ownerships. Opponents worry that it might be a preamble to repealing the ban on federal funding of horse slaughter inspection, which has effectively banned horse slaughter in the United States since 2007.
