What is the Midnight devnet?
The Midnight devnet was opened to selected groups of developers in late 2023. Following its success, the devnet became publicly accessible to developers on February 26, 2024.
This is an early, experimental environment provided by Midnight Network, designed for developers to test and develop applications with privacy-preserving features. It offers a sandbox where developers can explore the network’s capabilities, particularly focusing on utilizing zero-knowledge proofs for secure and private transactions.
The devnet allows for real-world testing scenarios, providing developers with tools and resources necessary to prepare their applications for eventual deployment on the main network, emphasizing security, privacy, and compliance from the ground up.
Anticipating telehealth regulatory needs
As early adopters of the Midnight devnet we have access to a suite of tools for pioneering data protection technologies.
At VeterinaryDAO, we’re actively engaging in preliminary research to lay the foundation for building on Midnight Network.
In the coming months we will be working on crafting and deploying smart contracts using Compact language, engaging with Midnight assets and decentralized applications (DApps) via a specialized Lace wallet in Chrome, managing transactions with tDUST tokens, and generating zero-knowledge proofs for secure transactions.
Compact language is specifically designed for smart contract development, emphasizing security and efficiency. It’s tailored to facilitate the creation of contracts that are both compact in size and optimized for performance, particularly on blockchain platforms where such attributes are crucial for scalability and cost-effectiveness.
Additionally, we’re planning to test a pub-sub indexer for blockchain data, supporting DApp and wallet functionalities, with development facilitated by a Visual Studio Code plugin for TypeScript and Compact.
A pub-sub indexer for blockchain data is a system that uses the publish-subscribe model to index and query blockchain data efficiently. It allows applications to subscribe to specific types of data or events on the blockchain, receiving updates in real-time.
This approach enables more responsive and dynamic interactions with blockchain data, improving the functionality and user experience of wallets and decentralized applications (DApps) by providing timely access to relevant information without constantly polling the blockchain.
Through this process, we aim to explore how we can leverage Midnight’s features to enhance the privacy and security of our upcoming telemedicine based veterinary services.
