Do you remember what motivated you to become a teacher? Was it your determination to make a difference and improve the lives of your students? Participating in the enhancement of life skills and supporting the development of others is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling journeys you can experience.

A key to succeeding on this enriching journey is the cultivation of a positive student learning experience.

As an RTO, there is a growing pressure to provide a high-quality student experience while maintaining educational value. This pressure is perpetuated through the constant development of government policies, the increasing number of students learning online, and trends in globalisation and digitisation. However, it is important to remember that creating a positive learner experience may be the key to differentiating your RTO in this growing and competitive market.

From enrolment through to graduation, it is vital to establish readiness, to connect with students, and to develop a productive learning environment. Mapping the student experience from start to end can assist in monitoring learner engagement, learning resources, student support, teaching quality, and educational quality. The outcomes of improving the student experience can be used as a measure of educational quality, ultimately enhancing the quality and reputation of Australian education.

Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) have embraced the value of student experience in their recent compliance updates. This intends to be a student-centered audit approach, surveying your current and past students and focusing on their enrolment experience, the training and support received, assessment experiences, and the completion of study.

Listen and explore with your students to check on their experience through surveys or direct calls. Use these measures to compare to other institutions, and identify whether your teaching approach is truly making a difference.
