New GitHub Certifications are out, should you get it?

Almost life like photo of me passing my exam part 2.

Have you heard of the GitHub?

GitHub is a cloud-based platform where you can store, share, and work together with others to write code.

Whether you have heard of it or not, it is widely used among the tech community from individuals to large companies. Recently, they have come out with various certifications, from the foundations level and higher.

Today I will be speaking mainly about the GitHub Foundations certification. I have some experience using GitHub for my projects. The main way i have used it has been forking other repos, exploring those repos and projects, and learning from them. So I thought it would be good to get a better base understanding of all of the offerings GitHub has to offer, learning the “Foundations”.

Ultimately, for yourself you might wonder.

To certify? or not certify? That is the question.

Like the cliche answer, you don’t want to hear. It depends.

Do you have the money to take the exam?

Do you have time?

Are you a seasoned GitHub veteran?

Do you not even know how to spell Git?

As a soon to be Navy Veteran coming from a non-IT field, I see this as a useful certification to have on my resume. Not only will it add some more credibility to me before the interview, but I have added some more knowledge into my tool bag for during the interview.

I will say that just with like most certifications, just watching videos, or doing practice exams will not suffice. If you don’t already have a GitHub account, make one and play around your profile and fork some repos. Build a small project and follow along a video course.

The knowledge you will gain studying for this exam covers quite a bit and after taking the exam I would go out on a limb and say it probably covers some features that even the most seasoned users may not have known.

Exam Section Breakdown:

  • Introduction to Git and GitHub
  • Working with GitHub Repositories
  • Collaboration Features
  • Modern Development
  • Project Management
  • Privacy, Security, and Administration
  • Benefits of the GitHub Community

I will say some of the questions seemed kind of silly, but I do believe those may have been “throw-away” questions or “new” test questions they were trying out. I started with 75, but only 60 were graded.

My test seemed to be heavy on issue template questions, I feel as if I had 3 to 5 questions covering that topic.

How did you pass though? What did you use? Just tell us.

Since the certification is so new there isn’t much 3rd party resources yet made at the time I studied for this.

That is except for Andrew Browns video course (10 hours) and practice exam (found on Cloud Computing Certification Training Courses — ExamPro ) which I found super helpful. Did I mention that they are FREE? I played the video at around 2 or 1.5 x speed. I would recommend his video course for those not too familiar with the different sections as it provides a good roadmap to start with. It provides intros for each product/service and then you can deep dive more on your own. Link below:

I did however find GitHubs own study material very good on the Microsoft learn platform. Link below:

And last but not least do not forget about the GitHub docs pages. A wealth of knowledge to bookmark not only mentally but in actuality on your browser. Lots of questions seemed to have been pulled from these pages.
