Learning Code with Kids

Late nights, early mornings, and frustration, these are just a few things you can expect as a parent or as someone learning how to code, but when you put them both together…lookout sleep deprivation, here I come. I don’t think I can even remember what my bedroom looks like anymore. To me it is just a really big hallway between my closet and the office that is used when it is time to get ready for work; however I have begun to find ways to help balance the hectic life challenges presented when one is a Dad, employee, and learning how to code.

1. Time is money — Kids are priceless

You may find yourself getting frustrated as you are constantly being interrupted by the tugging on your pant legs or by the whimpering of your baby while you are sitting in your chair worrying about the world, but remember to that little boy or girl you are their world. Take a break and pick up later. They won’t always need you so be there for them when they do.

2. Schedules

Creating a schedule for yourself is great and can really help you inch closer to your goals, but if your kids aren’t on the same schedule you will find yourself on theirs. Try getting them on a bedtime schedule. If you are able to get your kids to fall asleep and wake up at the same time every day this can free up some time in the evenings and early morning for you. If you are lucky enough to have an amazing spouse that helps you out, you will be amazed how much you can get done if your kids spend a half hour taking a bath and getting ready for bed. Having these times set aside for your learning activities help you to stay focused on what you are doing. You only have one thing to worry about during these times… learning your craft.

3. Take Five

During your day there may be times where you are away from the kids but have other responsibilities such as work. Find five or ten minutes to improve your skills. Lunch breaks are great for reading articles, listen to podcasts in the car, and you may even be able to find someone at work in the field you want to get into to talk shop with.

4. Let your children inspire you

As parents it is our job to teach our children what they need to know to survive. We teach them their ABC’s, their numbers, and their colors, but along the way we learn a few lessons ourselves. Children find joy and happiness all around them and they celebrate every accomplishment, no matter how small. Revel in your transition. Learn to celebrate your small accomplishments because, they will lead to big wins. Find happiness and joy in all that you do.

Late nights, early mornings, and frustration may be a part of the challenging adventure you are on, but you can also find passion, inspiration, and pride along the way. Remember why you are doing what you are doing and find love, support, and comfort in your family along the way.
