Stamp Art

The Commemorative Stamp Program issues stamps that honor events, persons, or themes. The first stamps were issued by the Post Office Department in 1893. To date, more than three thousand commemorative stamps have been issued that celebrate America’s national history — from animals to plants, people to places, and anniversaries to events. The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee was established in 1957 and its members use their collective expertise in history, science, technology, art, education, sports, and other areas of public interest, to consider and then recommend stamp subjects to the Postmaster General for final approval.

Holiday Elves

The Postal Service evokes the holiday spirit with four new stamps featuring a digital illustration of elves preparing toys on a winding conveyor belt in the midst of a snowy landscape. Each stamp features one of four elves. Surrounding the elves is a small, snow-laden forest of evergreens.

Don Clark was the stamp designer and artist. Antonio Alcalá was the art director.

Elf with Model Rocket

In the 20th century, Norman Rockwell, Haddon Sundblom, and other artists featured elves in some of their popular seasonal illustrations. Holiday elves were pictured as tiny, pointy-eared, jolly creatures, usually dressed in stocking caps and festive outfits and always busy with chores for Santa — just as we envision them today. This stamp features a digital illustration of an elf examining a model rocket in a small, snow-laden forest of evergreens as other toys and gifts move along the conveyor belt.
