Stamp Art
The Commemorative Stamp Program issues stamps that honor events, persons, or themes. The first stamps were issued by the Post Office Department in 1893. To date, more than three thousand commemorative stamps have been issued that celebrate America’s national history — from animals to plants, people to places, and anniversaries to events. The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee was established in 1957 and its members use their collective expertise in history, science, technology, art, education, sports, and other areas of public interest, to consider and then recommend stamp subjects to the Postmaster General for final approval.
Lunar New Year: Rabbit
In 2023, the U.S. Postal Service® will issue the fourth of 12 stamps in its latest Lunar New Year series. The Year of the Rabbit begins January 22, 2023 and ends on February 9, 2024. Calling to mind the elaborately decorated masks used in the dragon or lion dances often performed in Lunar New Year parades, this three-dimensional mask depicting a rabbit is a contemporary take on the long tradition of paper-cut folk-art crafts created during this auspicious time of year. Simplified illustrations of the 12 zodiac animals form columns on the left and right sides of the stamp pane.
Art director Antonio Alcalá designed this stamp issuance with original artwork by Camille Chew.

Lunar New Year: Rabbit
Utilizing red, pink, and purple as the predominant colors — said to be lucky for individuals born during the Year of the Rabbit — the rabbit mask in the stamp art incorporates elements with symbolic meanings on which the Lunar New Year is based, along with the celestial themes of the Chinese zodiac. Those born during the Year of the Rabbit may be seen as elegant, gracious, and kind.

Lunar New Year: Rabbit Souvenir Sheet
These three-dimensional masks depicting a rabbit are a contemporary take on the long tradition of paper-cut folk-art crafts created during this auspicious time of year; several of the patterns were created with the style of Asian textiles in mind as well as green flowers that represent the arrival of spring. The rabbit is the fourth of the 12 zodiac animal signs associated with the Chinese lunar calendar.
