The Security Question — Public Cloud vs. Private Cloud

Security is always a top priority for cloud computing resources and services. For companies determining their cloud strategy and possible adoption, security is one of the most important factors to consider. However, these companies often struggle in choosing between the right kind of cloud solution for them, tailoring the specific security needs. Here is a look at cloud security with the two most popular cloud solutions — public and private.

Security in Public Cloud

Choosing a public cloud essentially means that an enterprise enlists a third-party provider who delivers the required computing services (anything from processing power to storage) over the internet. In a public cloud model, multiple users share server services without any overlap. The shared nature is often a cause for concern for enterprises, but public clouds are built in such a way that all security measures are in place. Over the years, public cloud services and technology have grown and adapted to tackle potential attacks efficiently.

Even though security services are state-of-the-art, public clouds have certain limitations. For example, companies handling sensitive data might have issues meeting all compliance requirements with public clouds. The use cases that will most benefit from public cloud are the ones featuring SaaS applications in combination with vendor-aided security, companies that require additional capacity at constant rates, companies with applications used by a huge number of people, and firms who are deeply involved in testing and development of application codes.

Security in Private Cloud

The major differentiating factor of private clouds compared to public clouds are the non-shared resources. Even though a third party still provides the service, the infrastructure is dedicated to a single user entity, much like traditional data centers.

The non-shared ownership model gives enterprises capability to amp up the security of their private cloud. Companies can have their own layer of security and authorization measures installed if need be. This level of customization is not found in public clouds, as the provider handles the security measures. Hence, private clouds are ideal in terms of security for companies with sensitive data and compliance requirements, companies who need an additional level of customization to achieve their goals.

Choosing the Right Cloud

So, public cloud or private cloud? What is the right choice? Well, that depends on specific company needs and strategies. No two businesses are the same. For certain companies, security offered by public cloud might be the ideal choice; for others, it could be private clouds. Some enterprises also combine both and opt for hybrid cloud approaches. Evaluating cloud needs with an experienced provider can help companies find the right cloud for them.
