There are the theorist, thinkers, the stylists, and makers. They all studied design and do design but, there is a gap between any two of them. It would be ideal to have a designer capable of being all four, the theorist, thinker, stylist, and maker. Wait, before that how do you even become a designer? decades ago, it seemed like if you were a famous Italian architect, you could also be a furniture designer, design cars, appliances, posters, etc. and vice versa. Designing meant you could design whatever. Now that we have institutions and institutions are beginning to specify more, it’s harder to graduate as an industrial designer and end up a communications designer. Even within the category of industrial designer, which one are you? Are you a theorist? or a thinker? or a stylist? or a maker? or something else?

As an ideal designer is everyone and is capable of everything, an ideal design project is consistent throughout. Because, there is an aesthetic the the project and it will only be present in the concept, process, and the end product when the the theory, thinking, styling and the making are all on the same page. So, hopefully everyone involved in the project are well-rounded designers, or even if they are from different disciplines, I hope they’re all on the same page!

Well, I want to be a designer who does everything. I want to be a theorist, thinker, stylist, maker, curator, promoter, etc.etc. It may mean I need to study multiple times in multiple programs to be certified. Or direct my career towards multi-disciplinary projects. And alternate between and simultaneously handle education and work. It wouldn’t make me an expert at anything, but my own projects. It will give consistency in my work as I can consider every aspect of the project.
