Hidden Gems: Salto do Prego, Azores

Hidden Treasures are the dream of every traveler! To be where others haven’t been and to see places that don’t show up in travel guides… This time, we present one of the Hidden Gems of São Miguel Island, in the Azores, Portugal: Salto do Prego!

Salto do Prego is a hidden waterfall inside the Laurissilva Forest of São Miguel Island. This small waterfall gives its name to one of the many trails you can do in the Azores.

During our 5-day stay in São Miguel, Portugal, we decided to venture into one of these trails. We chose the Salto do Prego Trail, a circular route. Located next to Fail da Terra, a parish in the municipality of Povoação, in the South of the Island, this trail is of medium difficulty.

If you want to do a tour in the nature of the Azores, this is an excellent option! As a matter of fact, we can tell you that it’s a really, really immersive trail… So immersive that, when we did it, there was an earthquake and we… We didn’t even feel anything! As soon as we finished and got cell phone reception again, we had some messages from our parents asking about the earthquake.

We had to answer: what earthquake?

Not only for the existence of the Salto do Prego waterfall itself, but also for all the natural surroundings you will find along the way, we do recommend this trail!
