We’re welcoming you to this little Paradise called Island of São Miguel!
It is located in the Azores Archipelago, in Portugal. We had the opportunity to visit it in 2016 and we were absolutely amazed… Here is a (extensive) list of the Best Places to Visit in São Miguel!
6 — Fumarolas das Furnas
Yes, at Furnas again…
This area of the Azores is one of the most attractive per square meter. And the Fumarolas das Furnas are another one of the many attractions here.
There are beaches for all tastes, both sand and rock, all of them bathed by the Mediterranean Sea.
Located on the edge of the small village of Furnas — where you can find the Hotel Terra Nostra and the Furnas Boutique Hotel — the Fumarolas are a phenomenon of secondary volcanism.
They are openings on the surface of the Earth releasing gases mixed with water steam.
7— Lagoa do Fogo
In the center of the island, in the volcanic massif of Serra de Água de Pau, there is Lagoa do Fogo, a volcanic lake at over 500 meters of altitude.
Fog and clouds are very common here due to the altitude. Maybe you are a little more lucky than us with the weather we got there…
If you’re not, don’t let it deter you from observing this wonder of the Azores!
8 — Caldeira Velha
Located on one of the slopes of the Serra de Água de Pau, on the way that takes you from the North of the Island to the Lagoa do Fogo, you can find another manifestation of volcanism of São Miguel: the Caldeira Velha.
Surrounded by Laurissilva Forest, this set of thermal water cascades are a great place to relax and enjoy the medicinal benefits they have to offer.
9 — Ponta Delgada
It is not because it appears near the end of this list that this attraction should be left to the last plane…
Not at all!
Ponta Delgada is the capital of São Miguel Island and the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
It is a small town located by the sea, with a lot of history and charming corners that will easily become a mandatory stop.
With its many churches and white houses adorned with volcanic rock contours… With a very pleasant town center… With a market with an amazing cheese store… And with one of the most beautiful squares in Portugal, Ponta Delgada will surely stay in your memory!
10— Northeast
No, it is not the famous Northeast of Brazil, but one of the most beautiful areas of the island of São Miguel, in the Azores.
Situated — guess what — in the Northeast, this area has a bit of everything…
A lighthouse, a charming little village, several viewpoints and lots, lots of Nature in pure state!
This is an attraction you should not miss!
We were in this area for a short time. That’s why we felt that you stayed long enough to see. So we advise you to spend a whole day exploring the Northeast.
If you can, add another morning or an afternoon. It’s well worth it!
