🗣 Talk #14 — Wrap Up
Thank you for being present in the first Blockchain Conference at Viana do Castelo. It was a blast! 🚀 With over 160 attendees, several speakers working in the Blockchain world discussed its state of the art and what can be the future of the technology.
Viana Blockchain Conf — VTM #14
From Blockchain in Portugal, Ethereum, Neuroscience, to a philosophical view about the technology, we had it all. The peak of inflated expectations around Blockchain is almost gone, and heads turn to what we can really do with it in order to build better solutions for our future.
Rui Serapicos — “Blockchain in Portugal”
Rui Serapicos from ALL2BC opened the conference the status of Blockchain in Portugal, and all initiatives ALL2BC is organizing to evangelize the technology. Rui and his team are creating challenges that join students, startups and big Portuguese companies in the same room for solving problems in several sectors from Health, Energy, or Insurance. In a nutshell, they are bringing Blockchain to the masses!
Guilherme Campos — “The Blockchain Disruption”
Guilherme Campos from Consensys came all the way from Dublin, Ireland, to cover when and why he started his journey with Blockchain. He believes that Blockchain enables “Everyone to Own a Piece of Everything” and it would be, on top of Ethereum, the “Next generation database”. However, Web 3.0, or decentralized WWW, will take some time to reach global usage, like it happened with the Internet in the 90s and early 00s.
Francisco Marques Teixeira and Luís Anjos — “Blockchain Study Case in Neuroscience”
Francisco Marques Teixeira and Luís Anjos from muArts showcased multiple projects, such as Neuromarketing with Port wine, a Neuro-Interactive Yoga & Meditation Retreat, and a Decentralized EEG Data Repository with Neurofeedback technology. The concept of “Proof of Brain Activity” is at the core of the framework, and it has the objective of individuals exchanging their brain activity patterns for tokens they could use as a currency in multiple services.

Ricardo Parente — “Blockchain. Why now?”
Ricardo Parente from PICUS was the last speaker from the afternoon. He addressed Blockchain in a more philosophical and political way, leaving us to question whether the governors of the big economies will ever allow the technology to be easily accessible to all markets. Blockchain is here to stay but only time will tell how much impact it will have on our lives.
Viana Blockchain Conf ended with ESTG-IPVC “Computer Networks and Systems Engineering Course” Coordinator, Pedro Pinto, as the moderator of the panel, and the marvelous set of speakers from the afternoon. It was a great time for the audience to interact and deep dive in more specific aspects discussed throughout the talks ✌
