LITERATURE

VIBE 81’s Literary Journey Begins with Georgina Maynard

A writer, painter, and antiques expert, living in an ancient and rural part of SW France.

© Georgina Maynard

By Georgina Maynard

I am Georgina Maynard and I am a writer and painter living near
Cordes-sur-Ciel.

Every month, I will share with you literary events from around Cordes; Book releases and lectures, as well as all readings or gatherings that occur in our various communities. The region has a multitude of talents and I intend to interview another local author each month. It is surprising how often our region is the setting for many good reads.

I hope you, our subscribers, will share your recommendations, ideas or suggestions with me so that the reviews here will be spirited.

Books to read while enjoying the hot summer days in the garden or by the pool and maybe a reading club would be a great way to keep our minds busy on fire-day during the winter months.

To begin this literary journey, I would like to suggest my own recently published English novel, a thriller called “I Will Keep Her”.

A fast-paced story taking the reader from the English countryside to the sands of Saudi Arabia. Excitement guaranteed until the end.

ART

Landscapes of Light: Veronique Azam’s Turneresque Art

Inspired by Georgia O’Keefe and the ancient city she calls home.

By JENNIFER REYNOLDS

© Véronique Azam

Véronique Azam owns and runs a beautiful gallery in the heights of Cordes-sur-Ciel, where she presents her incredibly atmospheric paintings.

Her admirers often describe her work as “Turneresque” for its elusive use of light.

While living in New York in her twenties, Véronique decided to become a painter after falling in love with the paintings of Georgia O’Keefe. Invited to the studio of a New York artist (who was also Spike Lee’s set designer) who encouraged her to start painting by giving her a brush, paint pots and canvas; Véronique chose her object, a simple shell, and was told “Go”!

Throughout the development of her passion at Art Student’s League in New York, she never looked back.

Since she lives in Cordes, Azam’s painting has reached new levels. Her ethereal landscapes with a light crossing the clouds are inspired by moments and views surrounding this beautiful town of ancient houses. Her admirers often describe her work as “Turneresque” for its elusive use of light.

The pattern of the path to light creates an emotional connection with those who see her work
