Music industry has developed a lot in the past decade. There are hundreds of more software and tools out there today for a musician to be independent and make a living than there were 20 years back. For the first time it is possible for musicians to produce music, promote their music independently and manage their career which were not possible before.

Musicians who are starting out still face challenges in a disorganized industry with a lot of middlemen. At Creative Xchange we are on a mission to organize music industry starting with the live music which is a large part of the income for a beginner in the industry.

Companies like Youtube and Spotify have created huge infrastructure which supports musicians in their journey but they are far from providing a steady income to make a living out of music.

We did a survey with more than 700 musicians on Creative Xchange and found that the music industry still needs to be organized further and an organized industry will be able to provide more jobs.

Before diving down to the results here are a few findings from the survey:

  • Musicians who make more than average money are more likely to be paid in the range of 200–500 USD per gig.
  • Musicians who make more than average money are more likely to be paid in cash or check 2–5 days or after a week of the gig.
  • Musicians who make more than average money are more likely to receive a 1099 from the venue.
  • 33% of the Musicians who make more than average money still have to depend on other music related jobs to make a living.

Here are some of the answers and statistics from the survey:
