October 31st has long since become a fixed date for ghosts, witches, and vampires in Germany. Children, in particular, light up the lengthening nights with colorful lanterns and go hunting for sweets. This year, let’s find out how to upgrade your spooky day to the digital style.
The Celtic origin of Halloween
The horror festival has come from Ireland: In pre-Christian times, the Celts celebrated Samhain, one of their most important festivals, on October 31. They used it to honor their harvest, the start of the cold season, and a new calendar year. The Celts also believed that there could still be touches in the realm of the dead on this day.
Why do we celebrate Halloween?
According to mythology, on Samhain, the dead seek to find the living, who died the following year. People dressed up in scary costumes and paraded the streets even at night to disguise and escape from the evil spirit’s haunting. Big fires were supposed to keep evil spirits away. Small gifts (“treats”) were placed in front of the houses to appease the spirits and keep them from committing misdeeds.
The Halloween festival in German
Halloween first evolved into a party event when Irish immigrants brought their custom to America in the 19th century. Halloween is partied with monster costumes, brain jello, and cemetery romance — and has a similar status to Carnival in this country. This fun American version of the Halloween festival has now conquered Germany as well.
No matter how old you are or how many times you’ve been around the block, the holiday simply never gets out-of-dated. The littlest ones get a chance to dress up and go trick-or-treating, and the youngsters have a reason to be spooky-party.
