The end of the first quarter of the year 2020 & the beginning of the next one are all wrapped up in a tight little bow with a card that reads “Work From Home”.
Now while we understand the necessity of this hiatus & while we appreciate its importance, it is perfectly alright for us to take a second to complain, feel annoyed & all-around helpless about this whole situation. And if you have the misfortune of being in a newfound leadership role during this phase, you’re definitely not a fan of it.
So here’s a blog that can help all the HRs & operational heads out there. This is how we at Vicara are tackling the seemingly never-ending period of working from home.
I know that pretty much all of you know the importance of Zoom calls now & it probably goes without saying. But I honestly couldn’t make this list without it.
We have our regular meetings & stand-ups & reviews for the interns running just as they normally do & it all works the same online… Except that now you have the option to mute your team lead ( you probably shouldn’t though )
2) Google Docs
If you don’t like Google you’ve got the Microsoft version for you. But let us just take a moment to appreciate how easy it is to collaborate on content & reports when it’s on a Google Doc. Heck, I’m writing the first draft of this blog on a Google Doc.
You could have multiple people writing a doc, review documents, leave comments, suggest edits & so much more & it’s FREE! So why not?
Yes, I realise that I just added the name of a company on the list. That is because these guys have a LOT to offer. From the extremely intuitive ZohoMail to the easy to use CRM & HR management systems to our go-to Project Management System. They’ve got it all.
4) Udemy / Coursera
We understand that everyone is confused about this new-found power that they call “time”, and we know we’ve all got a LOT of it. So it’s time for education. Pick up a course on Digital Marketing or choose to learn about a field that is completely new to you.
Send some courses to your employees & let everyone pick up a skill that will set them on a better path for their career.
Why is this on the list? Does it even belong on this list? Oh yes. It absolutely does. Team building can’t stop for anything. Skribbl (Pictionary for the browser) lets you create a room with just your colleagues & get a fun communication exercise started.
Speaking of communication, here’s something that’s going to make your job a whole lot easier. Get everyone on one platform, get everyone to communicate & never miss a detail. It’s alright if you can’t be in the same office space, you can still make sure that everyone gets the message, crystal clear.
7) Google Calendar
If there’s one thing you need to keep your employees on their game, it’s a calendar, a common calendar. Put all your meetings ( online ones of course ), essential deadlines & dedicated company activities on the calendar & everyone gets notified right on their phones.
This is a great time to write. So write & get everyone in the company to write. Make the best use of this time to write about topics relevant to your business space, build up your SEO, write blogs that may help someone get through the anxiety of staying home, or just an entertaining piece for the bored (let’s face it. That’s all of us)
This one is for all the HRs out there. Check on the well being of your employees & help out those who are finding their solitary lives too tough to deal with. Call them up, have a conversation, maybe two, and find a way to help them get through this. After all, happy employees make for a thriving business.
10) Google Drive
Or Dropbox or whatever is your poison. Have your data & files up on the cloud, categorised to departments & teams. Ensure that access is given where needed & restricted where necessary. Having all the working files up on cloud ensures that people can find what they’re looking for no matter what time of day or night they choose to work.
11) Experience your own products & services
This one’s the most important. We have been given the gift of time. So why not use some of it to enjoy your company’s products? We ourselves at Vicara have taken out our gesture controllers & are finding new applications for it every day. Some of us are using the Kai to power-up our gaming skills, some of us are making our online presentations extra fun with the Eli Presenter, and some of us are turning our lights & fans into gesture-controlled lights & fans. The possibilities are endless. Especially if you know your product inside out.
