How Should I Read the Bible for the First Time?

I debated about how to read the Bible for a long time because I wanted to do it right. This was too important to screw up or waste my time. Such is the mindset of a woman with anxiety!

I found no consensus no matter who I asked or how many posts I read. I finally got so fed up with trying to figure out the right way, I decided I would just begin with “In the beginning…”

And so began my recovery from anxiety.

How Should I Read the Bible for the First Time?

There are many ways to read the Bible for the first time. Some are very structured, and others allow for more freedom. I tell you what I’ve learned about the most common, especially the methods I’ve done myself. I hope by the end of this article, you can decide how you will read the Bible for the first time.

Benefits of reading the Bible cover-to-cover

I grew up in the church hearing scattered stories and fragments of scripture. I wanted to understand the entire story from start to finish, so I read the Bible from cover to cover the first time.

Reading the entire Bible from Genesis through Revelation was overwhelming at first, but it was worth it. I have a deeper appreciation of God’s love for us. I’ve begun to comprehend His grand plan for our redemption and salvation and why Jesus’ sacrifice was necessary. I also learned how different events fit into the overall historical context.

I’ve grown a lot since then, so a few months ago, I started reading the Bible straight through again. I’m enjoying it because everything makes more sense now.

Choose either Old Testament or Old Testament

The Old Testament begins with the creation of the world and ends just before Jesus was born. It includes many of our beloved Sunday School stories, the beautiful poetry of Psalms and Proverbs, and the prophecies Jesus fulfilled during His time on Earth. By the time you finish reading the Old Testament, you will know how patient and forgiving God is with His people and why Jesus had to come to save us.

The New Testament begins with Jesus’ conception and birth and ends when He comes back to take His faithful to Heaven with Him. Read the New Testament to learn about the Son of God who died to save you and to learn how God wants you to live. I cherish the Words in red most of all, and Paul’s letters to the churches teach me to live more like Jesus wants us to.

Choose a Book of the Bible

For the last few years, every time I sat down to read my Bible, I’d pick a certain book. Paul’s letters have become like precious friends to me. You can choose a book of the Bible depending on need, interest, or the time you want to invest.

Choose a reading plan

Reading plans detail suggested readings about a specific topic during a recommended period. Many reading plans guide the reader through the entire Bible in a year. Other plans will focus on a specific topic, book, chapter, or Bible author. You can find reading plans included in most Bibles, at church, and on many Bible apps, websites, and blogs.

Is there a wrong way to read the Bible?

I don’t recommend asking God a question and then randomly opening your Bible seeking guidance from the first verse you see. This isn’t reading, it’s fishing for divine instruction. God isn’t a genie in a bottle, so this is usually not a good idea.

Just open your Bible

There is no wrong order to reading the Bible, my friend. Just spend time with God in His Word and in prayer consistently. Protect and cherish the time and His ancient Words will change you. If you miss time with God for awhile, it’s OK, just go back. He’ll always welcome you with open arms.
