Protesters force the government to backdown on autism residency case

Dr Banik’s and his family have regained their residency status after a government backflip. Banik’s son Arojkeet has mild autism, and the government denied Banik’s family residency on the grounds that it was a burden to the taxpayer.

But the decision was overturned after sustained criticism from unions, Labor and Greens MPs, academics as well as a select group of students from the University of Melbourne.

The decision is a rare win for immigration activists, but many protesters are frustrated Banik was put in this position in the first place.
