Welcome to Video Journalism 90008 and the site where we will share our work. I’ll also use this to post videos that are informative, interesting or inspiring. To start with, we’ll be doing some mobile journalism exercises in class, so please make sure that you bring a charged smartphone to the first class with ample memory for shooting video. Please open your own Medium account before the first class and take some time playing around with it.

You’ll also need a 64GB SD card and an external hard drive, preferably USB3.0 and 1 TB. (If you can afford it, the solid state SSD hard drives are faster). Bring headphones — with a 3.5mm jack — along too. If you haven’t got these in time for the first class, don’t worry.

Many outlets are experimenting with video shot on iphone, and above is the first half-hour broadcast shot entirely on an iphone. It won WFAA reporter Mike Castellucci an Edward R.Murrow award and three Lone Star Emmys. According to his website, he’s “described as country’s best feature reporter” (though perhaps not the most humble) though this iphone doc has snagged him a new job teaching iphone journalism.

Another journalist who does a lot of daily iphone packages is Philip Bromwell from the Irish broadcaster RTE. Note the camerawork in the package below, and think about how it differs from traditional TV.

His guest post has useful tips about equipment — Filmic Pro is an app that will be useful if you choose to use smartphones for assignments — and workflow, so is well worth reading.

That’s all for now. I look forward to our first meeting on Wednesday.
