Amazon Orders Three Kids Series, One ‘Shaun the Sheep’ Special
Amazon announced today that has ordered three new original kids series “Dino Dana,” “The Kicks” and “Lost in Oz,” as well as the half-hour Aardman Animations special “Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas.”
The three series will be available for Prime members in the U.S., the U.K., Germany and Austria, debuting next year. “The Farmer’s Llamas” premiere on Nov. 13, for U.S. members only.
Children’s content is valuable to SVOD platforms because it is seen as a “sticky” that keeps people subscribed. The kids programming race has been heating up in recent months, with YouTube and Netflix making announcements expanded offerings and (in YouTube Kids’ case) parental controls.
A contemporary re-imagining of L. Frank Baum’s “Wizard of Oz” novels by Flaunt Productions (“Under Siege,” “Project Spark’), “Lost in Oz” is Amazon first original animated series for kids ages 6 to 11. “The Kicks” is a live-action series based on the book series by U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist and current US Women’s National Team soccer player Alex Morgan. They were both part of Amazon’s kids pilot season announced in May. (Amazon announced another round of kids pilots last month.)
“Dino Dana” is the second spin-off of “Dino Dan,” which premiered on Nick Jr. in 2009, following the Emmy-winning “Dino Dan: Trek’s Adventures,” which debuted on Nick Jr. in 2014. Created and directed by J.J. Johnson, the series will be executive produced by Sinking Ship Productions partners Johnson, Blair Powers and Matt Bishop. Christin Simms will serve as co-executive producer and script the series with Johnson.
