Amazon Snags Streaming Rights for E! Original “The Royals”
By Evan DeSimone
Amazon has acquired exclusive streaming rights for the E! network’s freshman drama “The Royals.”
Produced by Lionsgate and Universal Cable, the series is E!’s first scripted drama. It will be available for streaming or download to Amazon Prime video subscribers. The show will also be available via the Amazon TV app on iOS and Android mobile devices and connected TVs starting today.
The ensemble drama led by actress Elizabeth Hurley (“Bedazzled”) follows a fictionalized version of the British monarchy. Hurley plays Queen Helena alongside William Moseley (“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”) as Prince Liam and Alexandra Park (“Home and Away”) as Princess Eleanor. The international cast also includes includes Jake Maskall (“Coming to America”), Tom Austen (“Legendary”) and Oliver Milburn (“The Descent”), along with prime time soap icon Joan Collins (“Dynasty”), who plays the Grand Duchess of Oxford.
E! is the latest network to leverage streaming platforms and binge watching culture to give a returning series a boost. “The Royals” premieres on Amazon today, a month ahead of its season two premiere on E!, giving viewers a convenient opportunity to catch up on season one before the new season bows in November. It’s a streaming strategy that’s becoming increasingly common among networks looking to hook new viewers for buzzy returning series. ABC recently made a similar move ahead of the return of Emmy-winner “How To Get Away With Murder,” as did USA with its breakout hit “Mr. Robot.”
