EXCLUSIVE: Bunim Murray Folds Digital Division Back Into Main House

Kesila Childers held the role of VP, Digital at Bunim Murray for over 8 years.

After over 8 years at Bunim-Murray Productions, Kesila Childers (pictured), VP of Digital, and her senior, John Roberts, who held the title of Chief Digital Officer, have both departed the company.

“They were a great team, and [Bunim Murray Productions] wishes them the best. Moving forward all digital projects are being run organically within [the company’s] existing infrastructure,” said a spokesperson for the company.

However, the executives’ departures brought a very different kind of reality to the surface for the decades-old Hollywood production house — the economics of having a digital division, in today’s landscape, are difficult to justify.

“Having a digital department is a luxury if you are willing to utilize it to experiment, incubate programming ideas and use it as a creative lab of sorts,” said Roberts via email when VideoInk reached out for comment. “The ROI is challenging, especially when you are comparing it to traditional linear television production,” he added.

Still, over the course of their time together, Roberts and Childers inked deals with Machinima, DanceOn (now izo), and Complex Networks. BMP Digital also had successful series on various digital distribution services like go90 where its reality series “Chachi’s World” and “Happy Wheels” have been flagged as top performers.

Both Childers and Roberts will continue to collaborate with Bunim Murray on existing digital-first projects.
