Facebook Star Matt Bellassai Signs with CAA
First there were YouTube stars, then Vine stars. Now, there are “stars” who owe whatever fame they have to other social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Periscope, Twitch, YouNow and — who knows? — perhaps even Tinder and Grindr.
With Facebook’s increasing commitment to video, we’re likely to see more stars spring from that platform like Matt Bellassai, who just signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA).
The 2016 People’s Choice Awards winner for Favorite Social Media Star, Bellassai uses his Facebook feed to muse on pop culture, the Internet and his struggles as a single, gay, none-too-mature adult living in New York City.
The 25-year-old Chicago-native has more than 1.5 million followers on Facebook, as well as large followings on Twitter Tumblr, and Instagram, where his content has been viewed more than 125 million times in just the past six months.
Bellassai was the writer, producer and star of BuzzFeed’s “Whine About It,” a comedic web series with an audience of more than 3.5 million weekly viewers. The show posted its final installment last Wednesday, but, according to a report from Variety, BuzzFeed is leaving the door open for his return.
Long considered the dominant talent agency in Hollywood (its Century City headquarters is often referred to as “The Death Star” by outsiders), CAA has been expanding its presence in the digital entertainment space in recent months with signings that include Vine stars Logan Paul, Hayes Grier and Liza Koshy, YouTube creator Yousef Saleh Erakat (a.k.a. FouseyTube) and controversial Instagram comic Josh Ostrovsky.
CAA will work to create opportunities for Bellassai in all areas, including television, motion pictures, touring, digital distribution and partnerships, endorsements, personal appearances and publishing.
