HuffPost RYOT Launching Virtual Reality Comedy Series and News Show on Hulu VR App

HuffPost RYOT, a unit of AOL dedicated to producing immersive video content, announced today that it will be launching two virtual reality (VR) firsts — a VR sketch comedy series, “Virtually Mike & Nora,” and a VR world news show, “The Big Picture: News in Virtual Reality,” which will have inaugural seasons of five and ten episodes, respectively.

The two series will premiere this fall on the Hulu VR app, which launched in March.

Co-created, written and directed Nora Kirkpatrick (“The Office,” “Edward Sharpe”) and Mike O’Brien (“SNL,” “Portlandia”), “Virtually Mike & Nora” is a sketch comedy series that will use the viewer as a character, acting as an omnipresent voyeur.

Hosted by Oscar-nominated filmmaker and HuffPost RYOT co-Founder Bryn Mooser, “The Big Picture: News in Virtual Reality” will explore everything from breaking global news and domestic issues to evergreen stories about everyday heroes in 360-degree video.

AOL acquired the L.A.-based immersive media company and VR content studio RYOT in April and rebranded it as HuffPost RYOT. It was founded in 2012 by Mooser, David Darg and Martha Rogers to spotlight the world’s key global and social issues through 360-degree and virtual reality experiences/ Earlier this year, Mooser and Darg received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Short for “Body Team 12,” about Liberian Red Cross workers who collected dead bodies during the height of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The Hulu VR app is currently available for Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR headsets (and supported Samsung mobile devices). Hulu subscribers can use the app to stream Hulu’s library of VR content — as well as its entire library of 2D content, including current season content, past seasons of hit show, movies and Hulu Originals — in immersive 3D environments.
