Netflix Boards Former Disney/ABC Television President Anne Sweeney

Netflix has added Anne Sweeney, recent co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney/ABC Television, and Brad Smith, EVP and general counsel, legal and corporate affairs at Microsoft, to its board of directors.

This brings the number of directors on its board to nine, with Sweeney and Smith coming in to help Netflix expand “the breadth of its global and entertainment experience,” the company said.

“We look forward to benefitting from Brad and Anne’s perspective as we continue to build our global Internet TV network,” added Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in a statement. Announced earlier this year, Netflix is eyeing an aggressive global expansion that will have the streaming service operational in 200 countries by 2017.

Sweeney is a three-decade veteran of the entertainment industry, and has held senior roles at companies including Disney, 21st Century Fox, and Viacom. From 2004 to this past January when she stepped down, she oversaw Disney’s cable, broadcast, and satellite properties around the world. Previously, she also helped establish and served as chairman and CEO of FX Networks.

Smith, who has served as Microsoft’s general counsel since 2002, has been with the company since 1993 and has amassed a “broad global technology and public policy experience,” said Netflix.
