Netflix’s Subscriber Count Hits an All time High

But Comcast and DirecTV aren’t out of the game yet

Netflix shares are booming. The streaming company’s stock rose more than 10% after announcing its second-quarter results. Netflix claims to have added nearly 5.2 million members during the quarter, a majority being from overseas. The total subscriber base now comes out to 104 million with international members accounting for more than half that number.

The growth, which can be greatly attributed to Netflix’s push into international and original content, helped the streaming giant achieve a 32% rise in second quarter revenues to $2.8 billion, and it estimates revenues will reach nearly $3 billion in the third quarter.

The announcement confirms that Netflix is still the king of the castle among streaming services, far away from being toppled. But of course, that’s not going to stop companies from trying. When it comes to paid SVOD services, Amazon Prime is the closest in reach to Netflix 80 million members in the US as of April, up from 58 million at the end of Q1 2016. But their biggest issue in catching up to Netflix is that a good deal of Amazon Prime members don’t use the video service; some don’t even know they have it. Online publication CutCableToday surveyed 360 Prime members to gauge their streaming video habits. While nearly 10% said they used Prime Video “daily,” almost 20% said they “never” used it. 8% of Prime members said they didn’t even know their membership fee gave them access to Amazon’s streaming catalog.

The third in line for the crown is Hulu, which had a total of 12 million subscribers at the end of 2016, and that ranking isn’t expected to change. Projections for 2020 still have Netflix in the lead with over 139 million users, Amazon at 96.5 million and Hulu at 35.8 million, according to an eMarketer report.

Of course, most of these services don’t come close to the numbers YouTube is pulling, with over 1 billion people using the ad-supported video upload site daily. Now if they could only get there paid service to mimic those numbers.
