PopSugar Returns to Linear TV with Z Living Partnership

PopSugar’s rumored sale to Japanese conglomerate Rakuten for $580 million last year never transpired, but its promised return to linear TV is now a done deal.

Today, the millennial female-focused media company announced that it has partnered with Z Living to create content for its linear cable network and online outlets.

Z Living’s programming focuses on fitness, healthy cooking, wellness, lifestyle and travel, including original series such as include “I Beat the Odds,” “Dueling Doctors,” “Fit, Famous & Fabulous,”Health Soup,” “Cook Your Ass Off” and “ Fed Up!”

Under the terms of the deal, PopSugar will create series carrying its brand to air weekly on Z Living in primetime, as well as TV versions of online series franchises such as “Class FitSugar” (pictured) to air during the network’s daytime block. It will also harness its 44 million unique monthly visitors in the U.S. (according to comScore, January 2016) to promote its shows, as well as give the network a first look at any of the original health entertainment series it develops.

PopSugar’s first foray into linear TV was the daily entertainment news program “PopSugar Now,” which premiered on the TV Guide Network (now PopTV) in January 2014. It was canceled fourteen months later.

Founded in 2006 by husband and wife team Brian and Lisa Sugar, PopSugar is parent company to the digital multi-platform network PopSugar, the digital shopping platform ShopStyle and PopSugar Must Have, a service that sends subscribers a monthly sampling of health, beauty, lifestyle and food products. According to the company, the divisions combine to attract more than 100 million visitors. The company is privately held and funded by Sequoia Capital and IVP.
