Tidal Announces New Original Series With BET — ‘Tales’

Jay Z’s music and video streaming service Tidal continues to build out an original programming slate. The latest project to be announced is “Tales,” an hour-long show created with and distributed by urban television network, BET. The series, which is executive produced by iconic hip-hop producer Irv “Gotti” Lorenzo, will feature a series of “song stories,” according to a release, that thread together classic hip-hip songs and story narratives in three acts. According to Billboard, which broke the news earlier today, songs like NWA’s “F*ck the Police” and Jay Z and Beyonce’s “On the Run” are examples of the songs to be brought back to life as cinematic pieces. Each episode will also feature a different writer and director.

The show will move into production soon but does not have a firm air date, at present, though it is expected to hit the small screens in 2017. Further details are said to be announced at BET’s Upfront tomorrow, April 20th. Plans for first distribution on BET are unexpected given Tidal’s proposition to give fans premium access to music and videos. Viewers can watch the series on Tidal after the initial premiere on BET.

“Tales” joins Tidal’s other scripted series “Money and Violence” and “No Small Talk.

This is not the first series of this nature. A similar style of project titled “Unbound” was recently produced by Instaminiseries and streamed on Instagram to accompany the latest album from David Bowie, “Blackstar.”
