TOLD YA! MGM is Taking a Shot at SVOD with the Launch of Stargate Command

Back in March, when Sam Toles departed from Vimeo to take on the role as Senior Vice President of Digital & New Platforms of MGM, VideoInk reported on the high possibility that the company would be reviving IP and diving into SVOD. Yesterday those rumors were proved true.
MGM announced that not only would it be reviving one of its most poplar IPs, “Stargate,” the company would also be launching Stargate Command, a dedicated streaming video service for the franchise and the exclusive home for the new series. The subscription service is part of MGM’s plan to self-distribute its own IP and, in turn, own the relationship with the consumer.
Written by Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry and directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan, the new show, “Stargate Origins,” will explore a new chapter in Catherine Langford’s early history surrounding the blue glowing portal.
Stargate Command will provide access to Stargate assets and content from the franchise’s 20+year history, and include a behind-the-scenes look at “Stargate Origins.” Filming is scheduled to begin next month, with production and development being handled by New Form, MGM’s Digital Group and entertainment studio.
“We saw a need for a definitive hub for the Stargate fanbase to continue to enjoy news and content, both old and new,” said Chris Ottinger, President, Worldwide Television Distribution & Acquisitions, MGM. “Stargate Command will open a new door for the community to celebrate and interact with all content in a way that has never been done before.”
