UK’s Sky Acquires MCN Diagonal View

Sky has been active over the last few years in making investments in the digital video startups including Whistle Sports, Fubo TV, Broadband TV, and Asia’s iFlix. The breadth of Sky’s investments in digital video companies has been narrowly focused on sports as the leading European broadcaster set sights on expanding its already strong sports division Sky Sports. Now the company has made another move into sports with the acquisition of Diagonal View, one of the earlier multi-channel networks.

“Last year Sky Sports reached one in five of the UK & Ireland’s total digital population and this acquisition will further our ability to reach new social audiences,” said Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports.

Diagonal View, which operates “AllTime10s” and “Football Daily”, was founded in 2008 by Matt Heiman (pictured) and Steve Carey. While the business was established on the earlier side of the MCN hey-day, Diagonal View utilized its influencer network to produce its own library of one-off and serialized videos, which it also owned.

“The breadth and diversity of sports that Sky has rights to, combined with Diagonal View’s track record in building audiences from scratch will be a powerful partnership; benefitting customers and advertisers alike,” added Francis. “Matt has an excellent team at Diagonal View that will complement our existing team of creatives and producers here at Sky.”

But the digital producer will also give Sky access to a younger audience, which is has been a consistent focus for the legacy broadcaster businesses.

“Sky brings rights, expertise and scale. Diagonal View knows how to make content that digital natives enjoy watching and engaging with, so this partnership feels like a natural win-win for both us and Sky,” said Heiman on the deal.
