As we grow older and hopefully wiser, we realize that we actually have the choice to remove toxic people from our lives — people we’ve hesitated to walk away from even though we knew we should. We learn that we can make the conscious decision to step back from people who not only create but also thrive on drama.

We learn to focus on and surround ourselves with those who believe in the value of kindness to self and others. By doing this, we ourselves find peace, both within and when we are with others. We realize we must now focus on what matters to us — our health, our fitness, and the time we spend with our loved ones.

We no longer have to dwell on what didn’t go right in our lives — what matters is that we have learned our lessons and moved on. We realize that holding on to grudges and resentment does nobody any good, least of all ourselves.

So let’s move forward, love those who treat us well, and wish peace upon those who don’t — because life is too short to be anything but happy.

And oh, it is quite okay to reach out to those who need help with what we ourselves have struggled with and overcome . . . so that they too have the courage to move forward.
