Sugar-free — or sugar substitutes — or artificial sweetners — are they healthy? The truth is, sugar-free is not the same as carb-free or calorie-free.
It is important to know the impact of sugar substitutes on blood sugar. While these may cut calories and carbohydrates, they can alter healthy gut bacteria impacting blood sugar regulation. Moreover, as they are far sweeter than sugar, one ends up craving sweets.
Some sugar substitutes may be carb-free, but most have carbs. Sugar-free foods affect your blood sugar exactly like the sweet stuff. So read that label. Sugar alcohols are carb-heavy and cause diarrhea and stomach ache. Use with caution.
