You all have seen Ben-10 in your childhood there was an alien named ‘upgrade’ this alien can change its shape according to the requirement.
Well scientists are working on a similar type of technology named programmable matter
Programmable matter is a special type of matter which has the ability to change its physical properties according to the requirement. It can take any programmed form.
So let’s discuss how this is possible this technology is divided into many subdomains let’s discuss all one by one
- Claytronics: This concept combines nanotechnology and computer science to create nanometer-scale materials called claytronics atoms or catoms. These atoms need to fulfill some necessary conditions first is each atom need to be able to move in 3 dimensions and these atoms need to be communicated with each other that is why these atoms have built-in CPU in them By achieving these two conditions these atoms can take any desired shape.
Different parts of a catom
A catom contains a band of electromagnets that is responsible for providing locomotion to the atom, infrared sensors that allow the atoms to communicate, metal contact rings which provides power to the atom.
Luckily we have microprocessors of this size already available in the market and we can use their computational power for atoms
These catoms do not require a large battery or a wired power connection according to research we only need to power some catoms and power is transferred between all the catoms.
Communication between the catoms is the most challenging step towards this technology as there are millions of billions of atoms and establishing communication between these is not an easy task.
Applications of claytronics:
Claytronics has a wide range of applications ranging from medicine to entertainment
Claytronics can also be used in disaster relief as programmable matter can take any shape and could be proved very useful in case of any natural calamities.
In the entertainment world, it has many many mind-blowing applications suppose you can recreate a movie you are watching and can play the protagonist in the movie
If you build your house using molding clay it can be recreated or reformed any time you want
Claytronics has applications in the medical field also you can recreate many artificial robotics organs which would be useful for many physically challenged persons.
