Viewly Alpha 0.5: New wallet, improved trending page, search, video embedding, ENS and token updates
Integration with the Blockchain has been a major source of friction for our users. We would like to make the experience as seamless as possible, and the new view.ly wallet is a major improvement already.
The view.ly wallet is now tied to your account, and is accessible from any device.
Because the wallet is context aware, we are able to provide simplified interfaces and custom UI’s, while cutting back on unnecessary steps.
Client side encryption
The wallet seed is generated client side during the wallet creation process. Users should pick a strong password, and write down their backup seed in a safe place. Restoring the wallet without the seed or the password is not possible. All of the actions such as transferring funds or calling the smart contracts are done client-side using web3.js.
Improved trending page
The new ranking formula takes into account the age of the video as well as the cumulative voting power of votes.
The new trending page prevents stale content from sticking around for too long, and gives more creators a chance under the spotlight on a daily basis.
The new search box automatically suggests channels, offering a similar mechanic to that of Twitter search.
250% higher upload limit
As per popular demand, the upload limit has been raised from 2GB to whopping 5GB. This allows creators to upload longer (1 hour +) full HD content.
Embedded player is here
We have re-written the Metamask integration code to support the upcoming major changes in Metamask itself.
Viewly token info page
view.ly/token is live, and it contains a high level overview of the most important aspects of the token, such as the distribution, contract addresses and 3rd party links.
Ethereum Name Service
Smart contracts powering view.ly are now accessible over human readable ENS addresses, such as
Improved 3rd party wallet support
We are happy to announce that several wallets including MetaMask, MyEtherWallet, MyCrypto and others now recognize VIEW tokens automatically, with the appropriate logo and metadata.
The next step for us is to integrate more closely with several popular wallets in the view.ly app.
Secure voting power delegation
Smart cryptocurrency users store their tokens on hardware wallets, multi-sig and cold storage setups. This does however come at the cost of convenience, whereby voting on view.ly is challenging or outright impossible.
We have found a way for sophisticated users to have their cake and eat it too. With the VotingPowerDelegator contract, users can “delegate” the voting power of their tokens to a convenient hot wallet (view.ly wallet or MetaMask), while keeping the actual tokens safe on a secure wallet.
Learn more about how voting power delegation works in this tutorial.
